Adapted from Ryan David Jahn’s ‘The Dispatcher,’ Apple TV’s ‘Last Seen’ is an Australian mystery thriller series that centers on an experienced and competent police dispatcher named Ian Ridley, whose daughter Maggie vanished into thin air about a decade earlier. Still feeling a void in his life since his daughter’s sudden disappearance, Ian refuses to believe that he has lost her forever. So, when he receives a distress call from a woman, he thinks the young caller is none other than Maggie. To reunite with his daughter and complete his family, he embarks on an adventurous journey that may have grave consequences for them. Directed by Christian Schwochow, the show is set in the fictional town of Port McKenna, which harbors dark secrets beneath its peaceful and quaint facade.

Last Seen Filming Locations

Filming for ‘Last Seen’ takes place entirely in Australia, specifically in the state of Victoria. Principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the Australian series reportedly began in late March 2025 under the working title ‘The Dispatcher’ and continued for more than four months before wrapping up in August of the same year. As per reports, the production injected around $50 million into the state economy by creating about 730 jobs and engaging over 200 local businesses.

Victoria, Australia

For the purpose of filming, the cast and crew of ‘Last Seen’ ventured to several spots in Victoria, in southeastern Australia. The events of the series unfold in the town of Port McKenna. In reality, the production team settled on the coastal town of Portland on the southwest coast of the state to paint the visual canvas of the fictional town. A mural of Port McKenna was painted on a toilet block on Bentinck Street in the city. According to reports, a portion of the filming also took the team to Warrock, a rural locality in the Shire of Glenelg. In particular, some of the climax shots were lensed at Warrock Homestead at 826 Warrock Road, about 18 km north of Casterton.

The aforementioned 19th-century colonial pastoral homestead/station complex comprises a distinctive collection of Neo-Gothic weatherboard buildings constructed by a cabinetmaker. Its unique design and secluded setting give it a timeless appeal, which proved beneficial while creating the backdrop of a small town for the mystery thriller series. Shooting was also carried out along the Shipwreck Coast, which offers breathtaking coastal views stretching for roughly 130 km from Cape Otway to Port Fairy. Considered one of the most treacherous stretches of coastline, it takes its name from the more than 600 vessels that are believed to have been wrecked along its shores.

Along the Shipwreck Coast, some scenes were also taped in Warrnambool. In addition, the production team utilized the space and services of Docklands Studios, located at Stage 1/476 Docklands Drive in the eponymous waterfront suburb in the heart of Australia’s creative capital — Melbourne. Just south of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula also served as one of the filming locations of the Apple TV production. The team also visited the wine-growing region of the Upper Yarra Valley, using its stunning rolling hills and rugged landscape to depict the Reid family farm.
