With Pablo Larraín at the helm, Netflix’s ‘My Sad Dead’ is an Argentinian supernatural horror drama series based on the eponymous tale and other stories in ‘A Sunny Place for Shady People’ from the renowned author Mariana Enriquez. It revolves around a recently retired 60-year-old doctor named Ema, who possesses the supernatural ability to see and hear the deceased. She calls the spirits “presences” and has learned to live with this unique gift or curse. While Ema is grieving for the tragic loss of her mother, she is unexpectedly visited by her niece, Julie, who also possesses the ability to communicate and interact with spirits, in her Piedrabuena neighborhood home.
A simple family reunion turns into something nightmarish as three teenagers are found murdered in the area, with many other residents feeling stuck between the world of the living and the dead. Now, it is Ema’s responsibility to understand Julie’s gift and navigate the deadly consequences that the spirits have inflicted on the neighborhood. At the same time, she must also confront the ghosts of her past. Originally titled ‘Mis Muertos Tristes,’ the thriller show is set mostly in the neighborhood of Piedrabuena and Ema’s residence, with its reclusivity reflecting her connection with the dead.
My Sad Dead Filming Locations
‘My Sad Dead’ is filmed in Argentina and Chile, particularly in Buenos Aires and Santiago. Principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the Argentinian production reportedly commenced in late June 2025 and concluded after more than two months in September of the same year. Thanks to the vast and diverse landscapes of Argentina and Chile, the makers were able to bring the Netflix show to life with an added layer of authenticity and visual depth.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
The capital of Argentina — Buenos Aires — served as a prominent production location for ‘My Sad Dead.’ Many exterior and on-location scenes were reportedly lensed in different streets and neighborhoods of the city. You might spot numerous local landmarks and buildings in the backdrop, such as the Obelisco de Buenos Aires, Torre Monumental, the Palace of the Argentine National Congress, the Casa Rosada, and more. In an interview with Variety, the director Pablo Larraín was asked about his experience of shooting the series in Argentina. He explained that he had been to Argentina before and knew Buenos Aires well.
“But doing this, working there, really looking around the city and engaging with local people, the local crews and everybody, I started to understand that the things that are similar are way more than the things that are different,” he added. “There’s so much in common. It was fascinating. I really felt at home in a way. I know that for foreigners, it’s obvious – they look down there in South America and think they must be very similar. But for me, it was a whole process to discover that.” Buenos Aires also features in various other movies and TV shows, including ‘When Evil Lurks,’ ‘Under Your Feet,’ ‘The Wolf House,’ ‘And Soon the Darkness,’ and ‘The Bronze Garden.’
Santiago, Chile
For the purpose of shooting, the production team of ‘My Sad Dead’ also traveled to Santiago, the capital of Chile, situated in the Chilean Central Valley. As per reports, the cast and crew members set up camp at numerous real-life establishments and businesses to lens pivotal indoor sequences. When asked about the most challenging aspects of the project in the same interview, Larraín shared that one of the most challenging things about it was “to bring into the sound space things that are never seen in the story.” He added, “Everything that is not in the frame but has a sound that is relevant for the story, is very intriguing to me to work with.”
