Adapted from the eponymous novel by bestselling crime author Stefan Ahnhem, Netflix’s ‘A Couple of Lies’ is a Swedish psychological thriller series directed by Kasper Barfoed. It revolves around two wealthy couples — Helene and Carl from Stockholm, Sweden, and Scarlett and Adam from Sicily, Italy — who are looking to save their troubled marriages and reconnect romantically. Their paths don’t physically cross, but they arrange a holiday-home swap, with Helene and Carl trading their modern home in Stockholm for Scarlett and Adam’s sun-soaked, homely villa in Sicily for a few weeks. At the swanky Stockholm property, Scarlett notices a surveillance camera in the kitchen, suspecting Helene and Carl are watching her and Adam. They also come across a mysterious, locked walk-in closet and nosy neighbors.
Meanwhile, in the lavish Sicily home, Carl and Helene realize that the property does not match the pictures they saw of the villa. Their suspicions about the other couple living in their Stockholm residence rise when the police suspect Carl of a violent crime. What promises to be a relaxing few weeks in each other’s houses turns into a nightmare as shady truths surface and the police get involved. Originally titled ‘Bytet,’ the suspenseful tale of betrayal and deception unfolds in the contrasting landscapes of Stockholm and Sicily, with the two properties harboring some dark secrets of their own.
A Couple of Lies Filming Locations
‘A Couple of Lies’ was shot across Sweden and Italy, specifically in Stockholm and Sicily, highlighting the contrasts between the couples’ homes. From what we can tell, principal photography for the thriller series seemingly commenced around the fall of 2025, with production wrapping up in December of the same year. By filming most of the scenes on location in Sweden and Italy, the makers grounded the narrative in reality.
Stockholm, Sweden
Known as the cultural, economic, media, and political center of Sweden, Stockholm served as one of the primary production locations for ‘A Couple of Lies.’ The establishing shots capture the city’s blend of historic and modern architecture, evident in buildings across different areas. It is likely that the historic buildings and establishments in the old town of Stockholm, such as the Bonde Palace, the House of Nobility, the Tessin Palace, and the Axel Oxenstierna Palace, might make an appearance in the backdrop. From the looks of it, the team utilized a riverside property to depict the scenes involving Helene and Carl’s modern house in Stockholm.
Sicily, Italy
To add a layer of authenticity to the gripping tale of ‘A Couple of Lies,’ the production team traveled all the way to Sicily, Italy, and lensed many pivotal sequences on location. To depict the drama unfolding in Scarlett and Adam’s light-filled and radiant property, they took over a real-life 19th-century aristocratic residence in the Contrada Cozzo Tondo neighborhood of the city and comune of Noto. Spread across more than 10,000 square feet, the property consists of 10 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a pool, and a terrace. Made of warm limestone from the region, the Italian summer villa offers panoramic views of the southeastern part of Sicily. As Helene and Carl try to settle into the property for a few weeks, the Netflix production takes us through its stunning interiors and grand exteriors.
