Netflix’s ‘Plastic Beauty’ follows a gifted and passionate ER surgeon named Fumi Numata, who loves her job because it gives her the opportunity to save people’s lives. Reluctantly, she shifts from her general practice to cosmetic medicine, a field mastered by the popular celebrity cosmetic surgeon, Rin Tohyama. The experienced aesthetician considers beauty transformation as a form of salvation, something as important as general medicine.
As Fumi and Rin clash over their opposing professional views, the former finds herself pressured by the complexities hidden behind the pursuit of physical perfection, while Rin’s greed for glamour is exposed in unexpected ways. Originally titled ‘Dauntaimu,’ the Yuki Saito directorial is a Japanese psychological drama series that explores the dark side of Japan’s aesthetic medicine industry through the eyes of Fumi and Rin. The show is set in the sprawling city of Tokyo, where the hustle and bustle reflect the commotion in the lives of patients looking for a perfect appearance.
Plastic Beauty Filming Locations
‘Plastic Beauty’ is filmed entirely in Japan, especially in and around Tokyo. As per reports, principal photography for the Netflix production seemingly began around August 2025 and continued for nearly six months before wrapping up by December of the same year. Thanking all his fellow cast and crew members, the director Yuki Saito stated, “We managed to finish filming on schedule and without giving up a single scene, thanks to the professional work of our dependable cast and crew and the hard work of each of them.”

For the purpose of filming, the cast and crew of ‘Plastic Beauty’ settled on several spots across Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The visual aesthetic of the Japanese drama series features diverse settings, including the Tohyama Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, Fumi Numata’s former workplace, pedestrian-packed streets, educational institutions, clubs, office buildings, and more. The production team filmed a few scenes at Shibuya Crossing, one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections, outside Shibuya Station in the vibrant Shibuya district.
It serves as an ideal backdrop to showcase the dynamic energy and the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, with thousands of pedestrians moving alongside a flow of vehicles, towering neon-lit billboards, and the nearby Hachiko Statue. Some scenes were also taped in the Nishiazabu neighborhood of Minato City, particularly outside the boutique jewelry store named Shinku’S. Apart from ‘Plastic Beauty,’ Tokyo has hosted the production of numerous films and TV shows, including ‘Inception,’ ‘Kill Bill: Vol. 1,’ ‘Exit 8,’ ‘The Day After Tomorrow,’ ‘The Creator,’ ‘Tokyo Vice,’ and ‘Human Vapor.’
