Adapted from the eponymous novel written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Netflix’s ‘The Final Problem’ is a Spanish period murder mystery drama series directed by Félix Viscarret. Set in the spring of 1959, the narrative centers on 13 guests at a secluded hotel on an islet near the coast of Mallorca, Spain. After a violent storm takes over the island, all of them find themselves stranded at the hotel. A different kind of storm also hits them inside the hotel when a discreet British tourist named Elisa Mander is found dead under mysterious circumstances. At first, they believe that she took her own life until certain evidence points towards murder.
Now, a retired actor named Basil, who was once famous for portraying Sherlock Holmes in movies, takes matters into his own hands and embarks on a mission to get to the bottom of Elisa’s homicide. Embodying his character’s detective skills, Basil encounters several suspicious individuals, including the guests and employees. He teams up with a writer named Foxá as they search for answers in every corner of the luxurious hotel. Originally titled ‘El Problema Final,’ the crime series is set primarily in and around the isolated hotel, with its dark rooms and corners hiding dark truths about the gruesome murder.
The Final Problem Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘The Final Problem’ was conducted entirely in Spain, particularly in the Community of Madrid, Catalonia, and Toledo. Principal photography for the Spanish whodunnit miniseries began in April 2025 and continued for about two months before wrapping up by the end of June of the same year.
Community of Madrid, Spain
A significant chunk of ‘The Final Problem’ was lensed in and around the capital of Spain — Madrid. In order to tape pivotal indoor sequences, the production team utilized the facilities and talents of Ciudad de la Tele (TV City) at Poligono Ar, 86, in the municipality of Tres Cantos. Spread across 22,000 square meters, the film studio is managed by Grupo Secuoya and consists of about ten sound stages and several other amenities necessary to bring any kind of project to life. Apart from the crime show, the Community of Madrid has served as a shooting destination for numerous movies and TV shows, such as ‘The Others,’ ‘The Bourne Ultimatum,’ ‘The Skin I Live In,’ ‘Berlin and the Jewels of Paris,’ ‘ Money Heist,’ and ‘The Gardener.’
Other Locations in Spain
For shooting purposes, the filming unit of ‘The Final Problem’ also set up camp at various other locations across Spain, including the autonomous community of Catalonia. To be specific, the picturesque coastal town of Lloret de Mar hosted the production of the whodunnit series. During the filming process, the cast and crew members were spotted taping many crucial scenes in and around the Gardens of Saint Clotilde, situated atop a cliff between Cala Boadella and Fenals Beach. Numerous exterior and interior portions were also shot on the Cala Sa Boadella beach and the Casa Roviralta, near the Gardens of Saint Clotilde. Additional portions were also reportedly filmed in the city of Toledo, which is the capital of the eponymous province.
