In Hulu’s ‘Not Suitable for Work,’ we get acquainted with a group of young people — AJ Pascarelli, Abhinaya “Abby” Chilukuri, Davis Beau Bradley Barrett III, Josh Teitelbaum, and Kel Washington — who strive to maintain work-life balance as they are in the initial phase of their respective professional careers. AJ is a first-year analyst at an investment bank, while Abby is a fashion assistant to a well-established celebrity stylist. When Davis gets pepper-sprayed by AJ, he believes that she is the woman of his dreams. His roommate, Kel, is a medical student.
Meanwhile, Josh is in two minds about calling his father to land a job at a network. With each of them aiming to achieve success, they also prioritize making time for each other and personal happiness. Created by Mindy Kaling, the comedy-drama series is set in NYC’s Manhattan borough, specifically the Murray Hill neighborhood. The hustle and bustle of the streets reflect the ups and downs in the personal and professional lives of friends.
Not Suitable for Work Filming Locations
Since ‘Not Suitable for Work’ is set in the Big Apple, it is natural for the makers to shoot the comedy series in New York City, New York. As per reports, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the Mindy Kaling creation got underway in September 2025 and continued for about three months before wrapping up by December of the same year. A few months before the premiere, the creator, Mindy, took to social media and shared her thoughts on the Hulu production.
She stated, “Last year I moved to New York with some of my favorite people to make a show called Not Suitable for Work. I got to work with old friends like @ConstanceWu and @jayrellis and meet a whole group of new favorites, including the incredible @therealvictorgarber and starring new people I love @angus_william @avantika @ellahunt @realjackmartin @nicholasduvernay @eggyboom I’m really proud of this one. It’s funny and romantic and about my favorite kind of people, ambitious people who still believe in love.”

New York City adds an authentic layer to the narrative of ‘Not Suitable for Work’ as it serves as the primary production location where many pivotal sequences were taped. To be specific, the cast and crew members took over Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood, which is central to the series, and lensed numerous key scenes there. For instance, the 2.76-acre public park, St. Vartan Park, hosted the production of the comedy series. Various exterior shots were shot in other areas of the borough, including the Midtown East neighborhood, as several local businesses, landmarks, and establishments feature in the backdrop.
In order to tape multiple indoor sequences and for scenes that required a more controlled environment, the filming unit of ‘Not Suitable for Work’ set up camp at Silvercup Studios, situated at 42-22 22nd Street in Queens’ Long Island City neighborhood. Home to 13 sound stages, the film studio also offers a support space, production offices, on-lot parking, rooftop shooting space with Manhattan skyline views, and more. Over the years, New York City has served as a shooting destination for many movies and TV shows, including ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ ‘The Drama,’ ‘Marty Supreme,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ and ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.’
