Adapted from Sherryl Woods’ ‘Sweet Magnolias’ book series, Netflix’s ‘Sweet Magnolias’ is a romantic drama series created by Sheryl J. Anderson. It revolves around three lifelong friends from South Carolina — Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen — who are there for each other in the highs and lows of their personal, familial, and professional lives. In season 5, the three best friends continue to face complications in their lives in the small town of Serenity, while Maddie lands a new publishing job in New York City.
In order to celebrate Maddie’s achievement with a girls’ trip, Dana and Helen travel to the Big Apple. The trio enjoys the hustle and bustle of NYC by going shopping, watching a musical, and visiting Maddie’s favorite spots in the city. JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley reprise their roles in the fifth season, which takes place in the fictional town of Serenity and in New York City, two settings that set the pace of the narrative.
Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Filming Locations
Production on ‘Sweet Magnolias’ season 5 reportedly took place in Georgia and New York, particularly in Metro Atlanta, Savannah, and New York City. According to reports, principal photography for the fifth season of the drama series got underway in June 2025 and wrapped up after three months in September of the same year. Nick Hagelin, who portrays Max Baker, expressed his gratitude upon returning to the set of the show for the fifth round. He stated, “So very grateful to be returning to Serenity for Season 5 of @sweetmagnoliasnetflix 🌸❤️🎥 Thank you @sheryljanderson @norbuck @howwastheplay and everyone else who is letting us get to know Max a little better!”
Metro Atlanta, Georgia
Following the pattern of the previous seasons, the production team of ‘Sweet Magnolias’ season 5 lensed many pivotal sequences involving the fictional town of Serenity across Metro Atlanta. Covington once again served as a prominent shooting destination as the cast and crew members took over various streets and neighborhoods of the city, turning them into film sets. For instance, they took over Sherwood’s Flowers & Gifts at 1105 Floyd Street Northeast and shot several key portions in and around the business.
A few important night sequences were reportedly recorded on the corner of Conyers Street and Gaither Street. During the shooting, the Covington Fire, Central EMS, and Covington Police stayed on-site to ensure everything proceeded smoothly and safely. Furthermore, the scenes involving the Serenity Theater were also filmed in the city of Covington. In addition, Atlanta also hosted the production for the fifth season of ‘Sweet Magnolias.’
Savannah, Georgia
In order to shoot the final episode of ‘Sweet Magnolias’ season 5, the filming team reportedly traveled outside of Metro Atlanta and set up camp in the city of Savannah. The county seat of Georgia’s Chatham County lies on the Savannah River and has served as a prominent production location for many other movies and TV shows, such as ‘Fly Me to the Moon,’ ‘The Last Song,’ ‘Love Off the Page,’ ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon,’ ‘Florida Girls,’ and ‘Living the Dream.’
New York City, New York
In the fifth iteration, since Maddie relocates to New York City for her new job, most scenes set in the Big Apple were filmed on location. JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley were spotted lensing several pivotal sequences in popular spots across NYC, including inside the Grand Central Station at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and Bryant Park, situated in the borough of Manhattan. The businesses on nearby Fifth Avenue also feature in the backdrop of several exterior portions. Furthermore, the iconic Central Park, located between the Upper West Side and Upper East Side neighborhoods of Manhattan, served as yet another shooting site for ‘Sweet Magnolias’ season 5.
