From the mind of Malcolm Spellman, FX’s ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ is a musical crime drama series that serves as a spin-off to ‘Snowfall.’ Set in 1990s Los Angeles, the narrative centers on Wanda Bell, who believes West Coast rap can positively impact the culture. To realize her vision, she brings together a group of unlikely geniuses, including her cousins James and Lamar Kinsey, and a talented local rap artist, Artillery. At the same time, she and Leon Simmons must find a way to balance the emerging music scene and street politics. Although her internship with label owner Darryl “DG” Grant opens up fresh opportunities for rap artists, it also creates a rift in her relationship with Leon. The tale of the emergence of rap music on the West Coast from the fallout of the crack epidemic unfolds in the City of Angels in the 90s, with visuals that transport viewers back in time.
The Drop: A Snowfall Saga Filming Locations
‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ is filmed in California, particularly in and around the sprawling city of Los Angeles. As per reports, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the spin-off series seemingly commenced in early April 2026 under the working title ‘The Drop’ and wrapped up after about four months in July of the same year. After the conclusion of the shooting, the makeup artist, Tania Vega, opened up about her experience throughout the filming process, stating, “That’s a wrap on Season 1 of FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga. There were many long hours and overnights, but every moment was worth it. Grateful for the memories and everyone who made this experience so special.”
Los Angeles County, California
Most of the pivotal sequences for ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ were lensed across the bustling streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles County. Besides being the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Southern California, LA is also known for being the home of Hollywood. Since the narrative is set in 1990s Los Angeles, the production team took over several streets and transformed them into film sets, redressing businesses and storefronts to depict scenes authentically. In particular, the cast and crew set up camp at Sony Pictures Studios, situated at 10202 Washington Boulevard in Culver City.
Home to 18 sound stages of varying sizes, the film studio also offers a wide range of on-lot locations, including Main Street, Fish Alley, Calley Park, and others. All these amenities make Sony Pictures Studios an ideal filming destination for a wide range of projects, including FX series. Furthermore, it seems that the filming unit made the most of the facilities at Orbital Studios at 7800 Beverly Boulevard in LA’s Television City. For taping exterior scenes, they also went to certain residential areas within LA County. You are also likely to spot numerous popular landmarks and buildings in the establishing shots, including the Hollywood Sign, the Los Angeles City Hall, Griffith Observatory, Venice Beach, Wilshire Grand Center, and U.S. Bank Tower.
